Session 1: Global Warming Science and Impacts

Facilitators: Pete Marsh & Dan Greaney

$25 per session or $60 for all three.

The science of greenhouse gasses is surprisingly straightforward, and in fact is the reason Earth is able to sustain life. We’ve known about it for over 150 years, and known it would create severe impacts for almost 50 years. This session will examine the simple science of greenhouse gasses, then explore the impacts, both worldwide and right here at home in the North State. We'll also present a very short preview of the solutions, for those who aren't able to attend Session 3.

Unless otherwise noted, all of the Community Education and BTC classes are offered online via Zoom. Prior to the class starting, the instructor will email all the registrants a link to sign-in to their Zoom class. Zoom is a free, interactive online platform, you do not have to have a Zoom account to attend a class being offered through Zoom. You will need a current email address, a computer or laptop with Internet connection, computer audio or phone.

This series meets October 8, 15, 22, 2020,  3-Thursdays.

Session 1 - Global Warming Science and Impacts: The science of greenhouse gasses is surprisingly straightforward, and in fact is the reason Earth is able to sustain life.

Session 2 - Global Warming Debate. This session begins with a brief refresher of the science of greenhouse gasses, then dives into the scientific method and the peer review process which are the mechanisms by which humans have come to understand global warming (as well as the science of human health, the science that helped us win WWII, and the science of internal combustion engines and other labor saving devices). Once we understand these processes by which humans gain knowledge, we'll ask, "why then is there debate over global warming?" We'll examine scientists' views as well as public opinion over the decades. Again, ee'll also present a very short preview of the solutions, for those who aren't able to attend Session 3.

Session 3 - Global Warming Solutions: The solutions to global warming are well-known, and easy to understand. The challenge is that they involve change, which means that some sectors of the economy will shrink, while new ones grow. Those sectors that face shrinkage are things that all of us use daily in our lives, and we're used to them. We get it; change is hard, and nobody wants to be forced to change to something new that we don't have as much experience with, and that we're told will cost us more. But failure to stop global warming will without a doubt cost the economy far more than making wise decisions about new ways of doing things. Most of the solutions are in fact better than the status quo for many reasons, and are actually less expensive than the status quo.
