Intravenous Therapy and Blood Withdrawal
Course Description: This course is designed to teach qualified licensed nursing personnel specific training in intravenous therapy initiation and blood withdrawal techniques; within the practice and scope mandated by the Board of vocational nursing and psychiatric technicians (BVNPT). This course presents the fundamental principles and competencies required to initiate, maintain and discontinue intravenous therapy, and perform blood withdrawal within the LVN scope of practice. This combined infusion therapy and blood withdrawal course is based on the nursing process and current intravenous nursing standards of practice; and the three day course will include the following instruction and review:
- Basic IV therapy and maintenance of IV lines and equipment
- Calculations review
- Fluids and electrolytes review
- Methods-procedures and best evidence supporting successful IV therapy and blood withdrawal
- Advanced theory: maintaining infusion lines-assessment and maintenance post catheter insertion and post skin puncture
- Prevention-early identification, assessment, and treatment of complications
- Nursing process-infection control
- Psychological preparation of the patient-age related concerns
- Documentation
- Demonstration and practice of required skills
Instructional theory hours: 27; and, Instructional clinical hours: 9
Course objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will meet all requirements as mandated by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.
Course requirement: Current license issued by the BVNPT or eligibility by BVNPT for NCLEX-PN licensure examination.
Included in the fee: Students will receive a program kit that will provide all equipment and materials necessary to complete the lab portion of the program. Handouts will be provided - no books required.

- There will be breaks during the day and a lunch break. Students are welcome to bring their own cooler with food and beverage to sustain themselves throughtout the day. There are also local cafes nearby if students want to purchase food and/or beverage.
