This two-part series will cover the basics of small business financial management and understanding how to improve profitability.
Session 1: Understanding Financial Statements and Income Analysis
- Overview of essential financial concepts for small business success
- Introduction to the ‘Big 3’ financial statements:
- Profit and Loss Statement (Income Statement)
- Balance Sheet
- Cash Flow Statement
- Deep dive into the Income Statement:
- Identifying and interpreting revenue drivers
- Key components of cost of goods sold (COGS)
- Calculating gross profit margin
- Understanding overhead expenses
- Determining net profit
- Using income statement insights to improve profitability
Session 2: Credit Analysis and Financial Forecasting
- Understanding credit analysis and its importance for small businesses
- Creating effective 12-month cash flow projections
- Setting up a simple Excel-based budget
- Making key assumptions for revenue and expenses
- Projecting future cash balances (monthly and annually)
- Practical strategies to improve and manage cash flow
- Using financial forecasts to support credit applications and business planning

Siskiyou EDC - Wildland Firefighting Procurement

Siskiyou EDC - Wildland Firefighting Procurement
This two-part series will provide small business owners who are interested in becoming a vendor for Cal Fire and the US Forest Service.
Session 1 will focus on the US Forest Service and the Virtual Incident Procurement (VIPR) system. This is the system the US Forest Service utilizes to develop blanket purchase agreements during the off-season, typically January through March. Participants will understand how to navigate the system, what is required to participate, how to register, and how to submit quotes and bids.
Session 2 will focus on the Cal Fire Hired Equipment Program. This is the system the different Cal Fire area units utilize to contract with vendors, which follows a different process than the US Forest Service. This course will also highlight how certifications can assist in the bidding process, how to navigate local area units with assistance from the small business advocate at Cal Fire.
